The US Wildlife and Fisheries are reporting a good hatch this year with duck numbers greatly exceeding last year’s hatch. The total duck population is estimated at 45.6 million, this is an 11% increase over last year’s 40.9 million. This is only the fifth time in the survey’s history (survey’s started back in 1955) that they have exceeded 40 million. Below is a chart that breaks down the total population of each of the species.
This year ducks will be more concentrated because of the severe drought and scarcity of water. With all the small stock ponds and pots holes drying up all over central Texas look for rivers like the Brazos and the Red to produce good limits of puddle ducks. But if its divers you are after, head to the many Core lakes like Lake Whitney or Lake Cooper. These lakes as well as many other lakes in Texas offer duck hunting with a permit through the Army Core of Engineers.
